This online training course is designed to assist faculty in developing and improving their online teaching practice. Faculty will be placed in the role of student, while also practically applying the course materials to their own curriculum. For the first four weeks of class, we will look at the unique needs of the online student and how faculty can meet those needs through research-based best practices. Once the instructor-led portion is complete, participants will have the opportunity tp experience the course development process at their own pace with guidance from an instructional designer. Participants will walk away with at least one complete module developed in Canvas and a well thought out plan for the continued development, delivery, and review of an online course.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants should be able to

  1. Identify and prioritize best practices in online teaching.

  2. Create appropriate ways to assess student achievement of your course’s learning objectives.

  3. Design engaging and cohesive online lessons.

  4. Establish a plan for future online course development and review.

If you choose to complete the optional Course-Build tasks you will also:

  • apply Backward Design to the development or revision of an online course.

  • create media-rich content pages and organize content using Modules

  • make a plan to enhance usability and accessibility in your course

  • use a course evaluation checklist to check completed work and identify areas for growth
